The other day my girl friend called and told me that she had put her puppy in a 30 day “camp” in which the puppy would learn how to behave. The unusual thing was that this training camp was run by inmates from our local prison. Apparently this is a great program. I can see how it would benefit all involved- the inmates and the pooches, and of course the owners of the dogs get a well trained dog after the 30 days. My friend then went on to tell how after the training, if you wanted to board the dog with the inmates, you could get a really discounted boarding rate of $12 per day. She was telling me that the local boarding “resorts” in our city are much higher. I looked it up and it can run as high as $28 a day at other facilities.
The reason this struck me was because right before my girl friend had called, I had been on the phone with a gal in the Social Service Department and she had been negotiating with me the subsidy we get for our twins. There’s really not too much to the negotiations. She just told me what the twins are eligible for and I said, “Yes, that works.” The subsidy we get for the twins is $15 per day per child.
Isn’t this all amazing?! It’s amazing because first off, I didn’t realize that people are willing to pay that much to board their pet. And of course, I am amazed that it is almost twice as much to board a pet, as it is to board a child in foster care. Unless of course you want a prison mate to watch your dog and then the rate is closer to what foster parents receive. We live in a crazy world! Now, when people ask how much I get paid for taking care of our foster to adopt children, I can assure them the government is getting a great deal. We don’t charge near as much as the local pet boarding kennel.
- This morning after I posted this my husband read it. He’s like, “Teresa, there are other pet “resorts” that are much higher priced!” He gave me the name of one close to our house. Yup, sure enough. This facility charges $39 per day! This includes a 6’X8′ private room which includes a private tv, elevated bed, plush bedding, stainless food/water bowl. I repeat, we live in a CRAZY world.
