It’s been a crazy weekend over here. I seriously, don’t know what we do to make it feel so crazy. Van did paint our kitchen/dining room this weekend. That added to the crazy for sure. Our kitchen/dining area looks sooooo much better. Amazing what a couple coats of paint can do. We have metal cabinets. Which I have hated. I have hated them because in the two years we have been in this house, we have scratched off the top layer of paint. I didn’t want to repaint because I figured they would just scratch off the paint again. But, upon closer inspection and further investigation, we realized that the previous home owners used latex paint. They didn’t scrape off old pain nor use a primer. Maybe that paint job would work if you didn’t have 26 grubby paws using it every.single.day. But our family is hard on our kitchen. Anyway, we are taking off the doors, stripping them down to the metal, priming and painting with an oil based paint. Van is a total perfectionist, so I know the doors will look great when they are done (or at least very good considering they are 60+ year old cabinets). But, it will probably be quite a while before they are painted.
I’ve always wanted to replace the cabinets and the counter tops (not to mention the fluorescent lights and the flooring). But really, they are perfectly useful. They are just very out dated. Our metal cabinets and yellow counter tops give me a shudder down my spine. I was researching online about the cabinets. One of the selling points of the cabinets back in the day was that rodents and bugs can’t get into the cabinets. Also, they were making metal everything after the war to keep people employed. Today, some people go out of their way to obtain these cabinets, then they take them to an automotive paint shop and have them repainted. They like the “retro” look. The practical side of me scorns the idea of updating with new cabinets, counters and appliances because it seems so expensive and extravagant. I mean really, I could purchase 6-9 grass fed cows for what it would take to redo our kitchen. But, on the other hand, I practically live in my kitchen and it would be so lovely to have an updated kitchen to work in.
In case I haven’t beat the metal cabinet topic to death, here is an article and pictures to delight you further.
